On Friday, ToolGen Inc., a South Korean biotech firm, inaugurated a research and development (R&D) center in Cheongju to further its advancement of gene editing technology, according to company officials.
The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to investigate seed development, including a walk-in chamber and a speed breeding chamber.
ToolGen is the only South Korean corporation that holds a patent for the CRISPR-Cas9 foundational technology.
CRISPR-Cas9, developed in 2012, is a gene editing method that permits the highly precise and prompt modification of DNA in a genome, following earlier gene editing techniques of Zinc Finger (ZFN) and Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases.
“The R&D center will serve as a base for the company’s global business, including business expansion, technology transfer, and sales,” said ToolGen CEO Lee Byong-hwa.
