On a formal visit to Uzbekistan, the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, strolled through the city of Samarkand at night. They toured the Registan architectural ensemble, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and were informed of its construction, decoration, and the significant events and people associated with it.
The two leaders were reminded of the strong connection between the French and Uzbek people, which began centuries ago. Sahibkiran Amir Temur, a great commander, was honored with a monument in Paris in the 15th century. The correspondence between him and King Charles VI of France focused on politics, trade, and economics.
The French philosopher and writer Voltaire wrote about Mirzo Ulugbek, and Jules Verne wrote of the majestic Registan in a novel. During the visit to this square, the grandeur and beauty of the complex with architectural lighting was admired by the guests.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Emmanuel Macron then visited the “Eternal City” Historical and Ethnographic Park in the “Great Silk Road” International Tourist Center. This complex features the symbols of antiquity and reproduces the recognizable details of the sights of the historical cities of Uzbekistan.
The leaders discussed how Samarkand is becoming an international center for summits and tourism. After, they were shown the unique artistic, applied, and musical culture of Uzbek people. The main events of the visit, including high-level talks, will take place the following day.
