On Monday, South Korea’s mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. declared that it had formed an alliance with Germany’s telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom to create a telco-specific large language model (LLM).

Per the terms of the letter of intent (LOI), the two firms intend to collaborate with prominent AI organizations, including Anthropic and Meta, to build a multilingual LLM that meets the needs of telcos. The first version of the model will be released in the first quarter of next year, and it will provide services in German, English, Korean, and other languages.

Furthermore, SKT and Deutsche Telekom are planning to develop AI platform technologies that telcos can employ to generate AI services with a reduced development time and cost.

“By partnering with Deutsche Telekom, we have acquired a great opportunity and impetus to become a global leader in AI and drive new growth,” said SKT’s CEO Ryu Young-sang.
