On World Tourism Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for governments and businesses to invest in sustainable and resilient practices to protect tourism jobs. He also stressed that targeted investments can deliver jobs and support local businesses and industries while mitigating the environmental impacts of tourism. Additionally, UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan urged the shipping industry to combat surging carbon emissions and decarbonize “as soon as possible”. Furthermore, data from the US government monitoring service showed that Antarctic sea ice has fallen below its previous record low of last year, reaching a full million km² below 2022. WMO’s Global Cryosphere Watch is on alert to see if this is the start of a new worrying trend due to rising emissions in the atmosphere and ocean.
