The 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, taking place in Samarkand, is in its second day and Central Asian countries and regions of Uzbekistan are showcasing their tourism potential at the international exhibition.
Ulugbek Qosimov, the Hokim of Surkhandarya region, reported that agreements with investors for almost $500 million are in the works. He noted that Surkhandarya has many opportunities for tourism development, citing the recent discovery of a 1st century BC Buddha sculpture in Fayoztepa as an example that has generated interest from people around the world.
In addition, a Hilton Hotel is planned to be built in Termez with foreign partners, which is expected to bring in $150 million in investments to the region. A website was also recently created to provide information about the region’s historical places and the lifestyle of its inhabitants.
