The Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva met with the European Union Special Representative for Central Asia, Terhi Hakala. The two discussed matters of trade, economics, and upholding human rights and freedoms. It was proposed to create and implement a plan of practical measures between the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and the European Parliament for 2024.
The conversation prioritized economic cooperation, as the trade turnover has grown by 35% since the start of the year. Numerous investment projects with leading European companies are being carried out, and the “GSP+” regime has been a stimulant for the export of Uzbek products to the European market. The extension of this regime for a new period was discussed.
Regional dialogue was also emphasized, with the transformation of the “Central Asia – European Union” cooperation format into a platform for furthering relations. The conversation also included the issue of strengthening the dialogue between women leaders of Central Asian countries and the European Union. A meeting in Brussels with the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia will be of great importance, as it will provide an opportunity to learn from the EU’s experience in promoting gender equality and women’s rights and interests.
