The 61st Session of the Working Group on Strategies and Review of the Air Convention was held in Geneva, with the Secretariat of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, established by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, organizing the event.
Azizjon Kalimbetov, the head of the Air Environment Protection Policy Department of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, represented Uzbekistan at the session.
The Air Convention, also known as the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, was created to safeguard the human environment from air pollution, and to gradually reduce and prevent air pollution, including long-range transboundary air pollution. This is managed by the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The Convention was opened for signing on November 13, 1979, and came into effect on March 16, 1983.
The development of energy in Uzbekistan, as well as in the rest of the world, can lead to an excessive amount of air pollution from exhaust gases. The Convention will enable concrete measures to be taken to regulate and reduce emissions into the atmosphere in Uzbekistan and the neighboring countries of Central Asia, ultimately leading to a considerable decrease in the negative impact on human health.
