On Tuesday, data revealed that South Korea had recaptured the first place spot in new shipbuilding orders worldwide for the first time in three months during October. According to London-based Clarkson Research Services, local shipyards had acquired orders totaling 1.54 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) to construct 18 vessels, representing 62 percent of the global total of 2.49 million CGTs for the month. The world total had decreased by 44 percent in comparison to the same period a year prior.

China was in second place with 820,000 tons to build 34 ships, making up 33 percent of the global total. Korea had achieved the number one ranking in July but was surpassed by China in the following two months.

In terms of order backlog, China was leading the list with 59.06 million CGTs, which was equivalent to 48 percent of the global total of 122.58 million CGTs as of the end of October. This figure was 410,000 CGTs lower than the prior month.

South Korea was in second place with 38.68 million CGTs, accounting for 32 percent of the world total. Clarkson’s Newbuilding Price Index, a measure of price changes in newly built ships, was at 176.03 points last month, an increase of 14.06 points from the same time a year ago.
