On Tuesday, South Korea’s health authorities announced their approval of the emergency use of Moderna Inc.’s revised COVID-19 vaccine to fight against the XBB.1.5 subvariant. This comes after health officials had recommended that people receive free and updated vaccinations against the virus beginning October 19th, in preparation for the winter season.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is authorized to grant emergency approval in the event of an infectious disease or public health emergency. Earlier in the month, the ministry also gave emergency approval for the use of Pfizer’s Comirnaty vaccine against the XBB.1.5 subvariant.
