On Thursday, South Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) gave the final approval for the operation of a new nuclear reactor, the Shin Hanul No. 2 reactor in Uljin, 218 kilometers southeast of Seoul. This marks the first such approval under the current President Yoon Suk Yeol administration.
The reactor, which has a power generation capacity of 1,400 megawatts and utilizes the APR1400 technology, will enter into commercial operation after six months of testing.
Since taking office last year, Yoon has made it clear that he is committed to reversing the nuclear phase-out policy of the previous liberal administration and restoring the country’s nuclear energy industry. This was demonstrated by the approval of the Shin Hanul 1 nuclear reactor in July 2021 and its full operation in December.
