Raising Awareness of the Modernist Architecture of Tashkent

The Art and Culture Development Foundation under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan is organizing a conference entitled “Where in the World Is Tashkent” to promote the preservation of the modernist architecture of the capital. It is set to take place at the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan on October 18-19, 2023.

The event will bring together experts from Uzbekistan and other countries to discuss and create a comprehensive strategy for protecting the look of Tashkent. Among the guests of honor are the architect Rem Koolhaas, the writer and curator Shumon Basar, and the cultural heritage manager Eduardo Escalante Carrillo.

The conference seeks to raise awareness of the importance of the modernist heritage of the city of Tashkent. Simultaneously with the conference, the exhibition project “Tashkent Modernism: Index” will be unveiled at the museum. It showcases the results of two years of intensive research and photographs of architectural objects taken by Armin Linke.

The conference is dedicated to the memory of the architect and historian Jean-Louis Cohen (1949–2023), who greatly contributed to the implementation of the Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI project. Highlighting the Modernist Architecture of Tashkent

The Art and Culture Development Foundation under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan is hosting a conference called “Where in the World Is Tashkent” to emphasize the preservation of the modernist architecture of the capital. It will take place at the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan on October 18-19, 2023.

The gathering will bring together specialists from Uzbekistan and other countries to initiate dialogue and develop a comprehensive plan for preserving the appearance of Tashkent. Among the honored guests are the architect Rem Koolhaas, the writer and curator Shumon Basar, and the cultural heritage manager Eduardo Escalante Carrillo.

The conference seeks to draw attention to the significance of the modernist heritage of Uzbekistan’s capital. Alongside the conference, the exhibition project “Tashkent Modernism: Index” will be presented at the museum. It brings together the outcomes of two years of intensive research and photographs of architectural objects taken by Armin Linke.
