On Thursday, South Korean tech company Naver Corp. revealed a more powerful version of their AI model HyperCLOVA X and its conversational chatbot service specifically created for the Korean language.
This is Naver’s attempt to compete in the worldwide competition for linguistic AI that began with the launch of ChatGPT last year, which has been praised for its detailed responses and articulate answers that are powered by large amounts of data and computing techniques.
Naver has stated that HyperCLOVA X is the core of their AI technology, which is based on supercomputing and data-analyzing capabilities and operational experiences from their all-in-one online platform, which includes Korea’s most popular search engine, cloud services, email, shopping and other internet products.

CEO of Naver Corp., Choi Soo-yeon, expressed at a Seoul conference that their technologies and experiences that Naver has gained from various sectors, such as searching, shopping and booking, are what support the technological competitiveness of their generative AI model HyperCLOVA X. She also mentioned that Naver has invested 1 trillion won (US$754 billion) on AI in the last five years.
In order to speed up their massive data-analyzing capabilities, Naver will be opening a new large data center in Sejong in November, which will hold more than 600,000 servers. This will act as the brain center for their hyperscale AI services, Naver added.

At the same time, Naver also revealed CLOVA X, an AI chatbot based on a large language model and CUE:, a generative AI search service, both of which are powered by HyperCLOVA X. CLOVA X, which will be available for beta testing later today, is the Korean version of ChatGPT and is able to give the most appropriate answers to user demands based on its conversational AI. CUE:, which will be launched next month, is a new interactive AI chatbot created for online search.
Choi said, “Naver is ready to face the new change opened by generative AI. We will support our sellers, creators and partners to encourage their diversity and grow further with our technology.”
