An MP is urging the owners of Lotus, a car company, to be transparent and provide clear information about the future of its factory to its 1,300 employees. The company has been facing uncertainty due to the impact of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, and there were reports that its factory in Hethel, owned by China-based Geely, may be shut down. However, Lotus Cars released a statement denying any plans to close the factory, but also mentioned that they are actively exploring ways to improve efficiency and remain competitive globally. South Norfolk MP Ben Goldsborough, who was part of a meeting with Geely representatives, emphasized the importance of openness in their discussions. He also stated that while Geely has assured that the factory will continue to operate, the capacity and number of jobs may be affected. Goldsborough, who could not disclose all details of the meeting, urged Geely to be open about their plans and consider the long-term sustainability of the site. Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds also met with Geely and stated that he was reassured that the company has no plans to close the Hethel plant. Lotus, founded in the 1950s, has been under Geely’s majority control since 2017 and has been transitioning towards electric and hybrid vehicles. However, the company has also faced job cuts in the UK. Goldsborough acknowledged the challenges faced by Lotus in the past, but believes that the company has always found ways to reinvent itself. He emphasized the need to support Lotus in its long-term reinvention.
