On Wednesday, South Korea’s leading telecom operator KT Corp. announced that it had inked an initial agreement with Indonesia’s state-owned telecommunications network Telkom Indonesia. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) is for a smart city project in the Southeast Asian country’s new capital, Nusantara.
The collaboration will involve KT sharing its cutting-edge technologies, such as quantum cryptography communication, cybersecurity, and more, with Telkom. The two will also explore various business opportunities related to the envisioned smart city, including data centers, transportation, energy, and artificial intelligence.
Indonesia is currently in the process of shifting its capital from Jakarta on Java Island to Nusantara on Borneo Island, with the aim of boosting economic activity countrywide and reducing the traffic congestion and climate change issues in the current capital.
Moon Sung-uk, head of KT’s global business unit, expressed his hopes for the partnership, noting that it could provide various services powered by KT’s advanced technologies not only in Indonesia’s new capital but also in other smart city projects in the country.
