On September 5th, 2023, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, and Kyosuke Nagata, President of the University of Tsukuba, gathered to explore the possibilities of deepening the traditional Turkmen-Japanese relationship.

The guest began the encounter by conveying the words of appreciation from the Emperor and Prime Minister of Japan, recognizing the National Leader of the Turkmen people’s contribution to strengthening the interstate relations.

In response, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty expressed his optimism that the visit, as well as the meetings held within it, would lead to the further development of the University of Tsukuba’s ties with higher educational institutions in Turkmenistan, and would be a beneficial addition to the Turkmen-Japanese scientific and educational cooperation.

It is known that in March of 2015, during his working visit to Japan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was awarded the academic title of “Honorary Doctor” of the University of Tsukuba, in recognition of his assistance in the international curriculum for mutual exchange in education and research.

The two esteemed scientists and professors discussed the opportunities for exchanging experience, training teachers to teach the Japanese language in Turkmenistan and the Turkmen language in Japan. It was agreed that such cooperation is vital in forming a generation with a wide perspective, and in bringing the two friendly peoples closer together.

The legal framework of the relationship between the two countries’ higher educational institutions is being consistently strengthened, and there are broad prospects for further joint work. This is especially relevant due to the expansion of science-intensive industries in Turkmenistan and the interest of major Japanese businesses in establishing a close investment and technological partnership.

The meeting also focused on the development of inter-parliamentary relations.
