At the IAEA’s General Conference in Vienna, Austria in September, a record 51 countries showed their support for the use of nuclear energy in the fight against climate change, energy security, and sustainable development. Currently, 410 nuclear power reactors in 31 countries are providing 369 gigawatts of installed capacity, which is roughly 10% of the global electricity and one quarter of all low-carbon electricity. 58 additional reactors are being constructed, which are estimated to add an extra 60 gigawatts of capacity.
The IAEA’s Scientific Forum on Nuclear Innovations for Net Zero was held in conjunction with the conference, and brought together scientists and policymakers to discuss the potential of nuclear energy to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The Uzbekistan delegation thanked the IAEA for their efforts in constructing nuclear infrastructure.
