On Thursday, South Korea’s Industry Minister Bang Moon-kyu met with Kostas Fragogiannis, Greece’s Deputy Foreign and Economic Minister, to discuss ways to strengthen the countries’ economic cooperation. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Minister Bang proposed expanding bilateral trade and investment and diversifying trade items.

Data from 2022 showed that two-way trade totaled US$2.13 billion, a drop from the US$3.34 billion in 2021 and US$1.66 billion in 2020. Minister Bang also suggested collaborative efforts on the eco-friendly shipbuilding industry to meet the International Maritime Organization’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2050.

In June, South Korea and Greece agreed to jointly develop technologies to convert existing ships to those that use clean energy resources. Minister Bang additionally asked for Greece’s support in South Korea’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo in Busan.
