As the selection of the host city for the World Expo 2030 draws near, Busan is making a last-ditch attempt to win the global event. The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) will decide the victor on Nov. 28 in Paris, and Busan is in a tight race with Riyadh of Saudi Arabia and Rome of Italy.

The South Korean government is keen to host the Expo, as it would be a great opportunity to demonstrate the country’s impressive progress to the world, as well as bringing economic benefits and jobs to the nation. President Yoon and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo have been actively pushing for the 2030 Busan Expo, and many organizations estimate that it could have an economic effect of more than 60 trillion won.

In addition, the event could be a platform to discuss major global issues such as the climate crisis, digital transformation and technological discrepancies. To increase the chances of success, Prime Minister Han is currently on a tour of five countries in two continents, and businesses are also engaging in promotional activities.

Riyadh has been leading the competition due to its vast oil reserves, but Busan has been steadily catching up. It is likely that the contest will be decided by a second vote, and if Busan can gain the support of the pro-Rome countries, it could be victorious.

The South Korean government, Busan Metropolitan City, businesses and citizens must come together to ensure the success of the bid. It is now more important than ever to maximize their efforts and make sure that Busan is chosen to host the World Expo 2030.
