In his Address to the Parliament on December 28, 2023, President Emomali Rahmon stated that Tajikistan will become a “green country” by 2037. This entails that all the electricity produced in the country will come from renewable energy sources by 2032 and greenhouse gas emissions will be decreased to the international standard by 2037.
Currently, Tajikistan is the sixth nation in the world in terms of the percentage of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. To reach this goal, the government has allocated more than 5 billion somoni for the construction of the Rogun hydropower plant, which is planned to be completed in 2025. Currently, 15,000 workers and 3,500 pieces of equipment are working on the project.
