WASHINGTON: A coalition of US legislators from both sides of the aisle have asked the Biden administration to raise tariffs on vehicles manufactured in China and investigate ways to keep Chinese products from being imported into the US from Mexico.

Mike Gallagher, a Republican who chairs a special committee on China, and the panel’s top Democrat, Raja Krishnamoorthi, along with two other representatives, wrote a letter to US Trade Representative Katherine Tai urging her to increase the existing 25% tariff on Chinese vehicles.

“It is essential that tariffs on (Chinese) automobiles not only be maintained but also increased to stop the expected surge in (Chinese) imports,” the letter reads.
