The Ministry of Science and ICT in South Korea announced on Wednesday a plan to invest 440.7 billion won (approximately $324.5 million) in research and development of the sixth generation (6G) network service.

The project will focus on creating wireless communication technologies, 6G wired networks, 6G systems, and standardizing 6G protocols. It is intended to provide services such as urban air mobility and virtual reality, by developing an ultra-fast and large capacity optical transmission system that will reduce latency in wired networks.

The ministry said it will strive to make the 6G technologies it develops compatible with international standards, which are projected to be set up as soon as next year.

In addition, the government is planning to develop technologies for the mid-band frequency range (7 GHz to 24 GHz) to boost 5G network service.

In the mobile core network area, the ministry is striving to innovate software-based next-generation mobile networks in response to the shift from hardware to cloud computing and software.

The ministry expects to showcase the progress of its 6G network development by 2026 and take a leading role in establishing international standards for the next-generation network service.
