The book, written by Frederick Starr, is a comprehensive account of the medieval enlightenment in Central Asia. It sheds light on the lives and achievements of the region’s most prominent thinkers, who were often mistaken for Arabs due to their use of Arabic language in their works. However, they were actually from Central Asia and belonged to the Persianate and Turkic peoples.

During the period of 800 to 1200, Central Asia was a leading force in trade, economic development, urbanization, art, and knowledge. The region’s scholars made significant contributions in various fields such as astronomy, mathematics, geology, medicine, chemistry, music, social science, philosophy, and theology. They were responsible for naming algebra, accurately measuring the earth’s diameter, and producing influential works that shaped European medicine and literature.

The book was prepared for publication with the help of the Uzbekistan Embassy in the United States and official permission was obtained. It is published by the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center and will be distributed to all educational institutions in Uzbekistan. “Lost Enlightenment” is a valuable resource for those interested in the history and culture of Central Asia.
