At the Summit of the Future Global Call event, the UN Secretary-General stressed the need for greater global solidarity and better management of critical issues, as well as an upgraded United Nations that can effectively address the challenges of a new era. This landmark summit is expected to result in the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and respond to emerging challenges and opportunities. The SDGs are a set of internationally agreed targets to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity by 2030. The summit, which is scheduled to take place on 22 and 23 September, has been years in the making. However, the current institutions and tools are not equipped to address the rapidly evolving challenges of the 21st century. UN chief Antonio Guterres emphasized the need for reforming the Security Council and international financial architecture in order to achieve the summit’s goals. He called on Member States to act swiftly and with courage and compromise to finalize the three draft agreements. Guterres praised the UN as a unique platform for convening key stakeholders, particularly during times of global upheaval. The event also highlighted the need to address the changing nature of warfare, manage the risks of new technologies, and recognize the climate crisis as a major threat to global security. Guterres urged all governments to be ambitious in their commitments to restore hope and trust and address the challenges of our time. The live event was attended by the President of Namibia and the Chancellor of Germany, who promoted the summit as an opportunity to hear Member States’ voices and make bold commitments to reinvigorate the UN and multilateralism for the 21st century. Both leaders expressed their hopes for the next generations and emphasized the need for unity and cooperation.
