In its first week of operation, a new Israeli-backed food distribution system in Gaza has resulted in multiple fatalities. According to Gaza health officials, nearly 50 people were killed in two separate shootings near one aid site within a span of three days. The Israeli military claims that its soldiers were responsible for the shootings.
Although there is limited footage of the violence itself, The New York Times analyzed videos and satellite imagery to show the chaos that ensued as desperate Gazans scrambled for aid. One video, shared by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, shows Palestinians rushing for food boxes at dawn as the aid site opens.
Due to restrictions on international journalists in Gaza, there is limited coverage of the new distribution sites.
