The fifth Manama Declaration, named after the capital of Bahrain where the 2024 World Entrepreneurship Investment Forum (WEIF) is currently taking place, echoes the forum’s theme that innovation can drive the development of technologies and products to address socioeconomic and environmental challenges. This can lead to economic advances that can then be used to invest in sustainable development.
In a message to the forum, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged delegates to harness the power of entrepreneurship and innovation to create a better world for all people and the planet. The forum also highlighted the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship for persons with disabilities, showcasing how technology can help them overcome obstacles and promote inclusive communities.
The WEIF, organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and its partners, aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the Arab region, where 15% of the population has disabilities. The forum also featured presentations from individuals and organizations using technology and innovation to empower those with disabilities, promote mental health, and address issues such as bullying and body shaming.
The Manama Declaration, a two-page document, calls on all stakeholders to work together towards achieving the SDGs through promoting entrepreneurship and innovation. It also highlights the need for the international community to support women and youth in post-conflict areas and promote stability through funding female entrepreneurs. The declaration will be presented to the UN General Assembly.
