On August 18, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a delegation from the United Nations, headed by Miroslav Jenča, the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas at the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs – Department of Peace Operations. During the meeting, the importance of further enhancing multifaceted collaboration with the UN institutions and centers for the purpose of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals was discussed.
The High Representative Miroslav Jenča passed on the best wishes of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the President of Uzbekistan. Moreover, the UN structures expressed their readiness to continue to support Uzbekistan in its program of reforms for building New Uzbekistan.
In recent years, the cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN has grown to an unprecedented level, with 140 programs and projects being implemented jointly. At the initiative of the Uzbek side, 6 resolutions of the General Assembly of the United Nations have been adopted. Uzbekistan is also actively involved in the activities of the Human Rights Council, the Commission of the Economic and Social Council, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and many other structures.
Several important international events are planned to be held in Uzbekistan within the framework of the UN in the second half of this year, such as the FAO Conference on Food Security and the 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly. The prospects for practical interaction in implementing national tasks and goals in sustainable development were considered at the meeting.
The primary focus was on the issues of deepening the relations of good neighborliness and partnership in Central Asia and strengthening the role of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in this process.
