On September 21, the first session of the High-Level Working Group on the Multimodal Corridor “Tajikistan – Uzbekistan – Turkmenistan – Iran – Turkiye” will be held in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe. The meeting is organized by the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) at the recommendation of the “Ankara Declaration” adopted at the 11th meeting of ECO Ministers of Transport.

The purpose of the gathering is to develop and promote the said international transit corridor in order to increase cargo transportation and facilitate trade procedures, particularly for those countries without access to the sea. The new route for goods from China to Turkiye via Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Iran was introduced on October 18, 2022 in Dushanbe during the International Conference “Logistics and its advantages in the development of transport links between Tajikistan and the countries of the region.”

At the conference, the Minister of Transport of Tajikistan Azim Ibrohim declared the opening of the multimodal corridor “Tajikistan – Uzbekistan – Turkmenistan – Iran – Turkiye”, noting that it is more cost-effective than existing routes and helps to revive the Great Silk Road and regional economic integration.

Ibrohim also mentioned the automation project of the control system and the introduction of online positioning of cargo movement across Tajikistan. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of the project in terms of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals during his speech at the 10th Meeting of SCO Ministers of Transport on April 28, 2023, in New Delhi.
