BERLIN, Sept. 4 (Yonhap) — Samsung Electronics Co. is planning to introduce generative artificial intelligence (AI) features to its home appliances in the upcoming year, according to Yoo Mi-young, head of the software development team of Samsung’s digital appliances division. This was announced at a media briefing at the IFA tech trade show in Berlin.

The AI technologies will be used to improve voice, vision, and display capabilities, allowing home gadgets to communicate with users in a more conversational manner and to better respond to their questions. Additionally, they will be able to identify what kind of food is being cooked in the oven or what ingredients are stored in the refrigerator, providing tailored recipes and dietary suggestions.

Samsung is also developing a chipset to reduce energy consumption, as home devices become smarter and process a large amount of data. Yoo Mi-young stated that they are aiming to apply the chipset next year.

European consumers are becoming more aware of the advantages of connected devices, as they are now realizing that interconnected appliances can help reduce energy costs. Yoo Mi-young emphasized that Samsung is keeping three core principles in mind when it comes to AI technology development: fairness, transparency, and accountability.

The company’s smart home campaign, which began in 2014 with the acquisition of SmartThings, is focused on connecting all home appliances, making them sense and detect surrounding circumstances, and recommending the best options through automatic optimization.
