On September 20th, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with the President of the World Bank Group Ajay Banga in New York City. At the gathering, the two discussed ways to further bolster cooperation between Uzbekistan and the World Bank.
President Mirziyoyev congratulated Banga on his appointment as President of the World Bank and expressed his confidence that the bank would continue to support sustainable economic growth in developing countries under his leadership.
Topics of conversation included increasing the bank’s expert and technical assistance in privatization and effective public administration, financing, and attracting private investment, including through public-private partnerships, in projects on decarbonization, alternative energy, infrastructure, communications, water supply, as well as support for initiatives such as the construction of the Trans-Afghan railway.
Ajay Banga highly praised the program of unalterable reforms in Uzbekistan and declared his readiness to further develop a mutually beneficial partnership.
The two parties agreed to involve the bank’s Advisory Council, which is comprised of business leaders from around the world, in formulating measures to increase the influx of direct investment into Uzbekistan.
It is worth noting that Uzbekistan is one of the bank’s most important partner countries. The joint project portfolio has grown more than fivefold in the last six years.
The current 2026 Cooperation Program, which includes projects worth $4 billion, covers all the priorities of the Development Strategy of New Uzbekistan.
