SEOUL, Oct. 4 (Yonhap) — Renault Korea Motors, the South Korean division of Renault S.A., reported Wednesday that its sales for the month of September had plummeted 52 percent year-on-year due to a lack of demand for its vehicles.
The company sold 9,105 vehicles in September, compared to 18,922 units in the same period of the previous year. Domestic sales dropped 67 percent to 1,651 units, while exports fell 46 percent to 7,454 units.
From January to September, Renault Korea’s sales decreased by 29 percent to 87,201 cars, with domestic sales down 57 percent to 17,128 vehicles and exports decreasing 17 percent to 70,073.
In an effort to revive sales, Renault Korea said it is focusing on gasoline hybrid models and making preparations for the production of all-electric models.
The carmaker currently offers one hybrid electric model, the XM3 compact SUV, as well as three gasoline-powered models: the XM3, QM6 SUV and SM6 midsize sedan. Renault Korea has also announced plans to add a midsized gasoline hybrid SUV model to its lineup in the second half of 2021 as part of its Aurora 1 project.
