It is a tradition in Uzbekistan to pay tribute to the patriots who fought for independence and freedom on days of independence celebrations, to show that the people of the nation will never forget and always appreciate the sacrifices made for the homeland.

The alley is situated on the site where thousands of people were executed in 1937-1938, during the totalitarian regime. Since then, the area has been landscaped and a Museum of Memory of the Victims of Repression has been established, with branches in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and other regions. It has also organised an exhibition dedicated to the enlightenment figures of Turkestan.

The President expressed his sorrow for the political repressions against Sharof Rashidov, a great son of Uzbekistan people who was the country’s leader for 25 years, which started after his death. He also praised the work being done to study the life of the Jadids and to honour the unjustly persecuted people.

The Head of State suggested that nameplates with the victims of repression should be installed in their homes and schools, and that visits should be made to them on such memorable days. He also said that books should be published about them and that their stories should be shared with the younger generation.
