South Korean oil refiner GS Caltex Corp. and shipping company HMM Co. have started the pilot operation of a container ship that is powered by GS Caltex’s B30 bio marine fuel. The 6,400 twenty-foot equivalent unit vessel will journey from Busan to Singapore, India, and South America.

Bio marine fuel has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by more than 65 percent compared to the fossil fuel-based marine fuel, and biodiesel from waste cooking oil can decrease carbon emissions by over 80 percent.

The B30 bio marine fuel was created with heavy fuel oil and biodiesel from waste cooking oil. The test operation of the ship is part of GS Caltex’s initiative to increase the utilization of green fuels, such as biofuels for vessels and airplanes, as the world moves towards decarbonization.
