Increasing Role of Women in the Fuel and Energy Sector of Uzbekistan

A workshop on “Gender Equality in the Fuel and Energy Complex of Uzbekistan” was held at the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank and O’zbekiston Milliy Elektr Tarmoqlari JSC. Representatives from local and foreign organizations, as well as women working in the system, attended the event. Feruza Khojimurodova, the Deputy Chairperson of the Council for Gender Consultations of Uzbekistan Milliy Elektr Tarmoqlari JSC, discussed the objectives and expected results of the workshop.

Ms. Khojimurodova noted that the Ministry of Energy is devoted to enhancing the role of women in the fuel and energy sector, providing them with ample opportunities, and facilitating the exchange of experience on an international level. Additionally, the Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality in the Republic of Uzbekistan until 2030 has been approved. This document focuses on increasing the number of female employees in government, offering educational opportunities, and combating violence and harassment against women.

Moreover, programs to support women are being implemented with the help of international organizations. Due to this attention, considerable progress has been made in promoting gender equality in Uzbekistan and increasing the number of female workers in the energy sector. During the workshop, participants exchanged ideas on the development of gender institutional competence and capacity building of gender centers in energy companies.

In addition, issues concerning the training of women for energy sector enterprises in creating a healthy workplace environment, safety, and inclusivity were addressed. The event was attended by more than 50 women from the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Cabinet of Ministers, Family and Women’s Committee, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, energy companies of Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia, and the fuel and energy complex of Uzbekistan. Best practices were also discussed.
