On Friday, South Korean oil refiner GS Caltex Corp. and shipping company HMM Co. launched a pilot operation of a container ship powered by the refiner’s B30 bio marine fuel. The vessel, which holds a capacity of 6,400 twenty-foot equivalent units, will take a voyage from a port in Busan to Singapore, India, and South America. The biofuel is composed of waste feedstock and reduces carbon emissions by more than 65 percent in comparison to traditional marine fuel. Especially, biodiesel from cooking oil waste is globally acknowledged as being able to cut carbon emissions by over 80 percent. The B30 bio marine fuel used in the operation is a mix of heavy fuel oil and biodiesel from cooking oil waste. This trial is part of GS Caltex’s efforts to propagate the use of green fuels, such as biofuels for vessels and airplanes, in line with the global decarbonization movement.
