At the 21st Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the UNCCD (CRIC21), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) hosted an event called “Upgrading LDN implementation through Recarbonization of Soils (RECSOIL)”. The event was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from 13 to 17 October 2023, and drew over 500 delegates from 196 countries. FAO also co-organized and participated in a High-Level Event on Sand and Dust Storms, to provide insight on actions that support Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN).
In cooperation with the Global Soil Partnership, the side event focused on the role of Soil Recarbonization in UNCCD implementation and how it relates to the other Rio Conventions. Presenters shared best practices from the Caribbean, Colombia, Türkiye, and Central Asia, and Muhammadjon Kosimov, National Manager of the Regional Project “Integrated Natural Resources Management in Drought-prone and Salt-affected Agricultural Production Landscapes in Central Asia and Türkiye” (CACILM2) in Uzbekistan, spoke about the Soil Doctors program in CACILM2 and the challenges and opportunities for promoting Integrated Natural Resource Management in Uzbekistan.
