The production of carpets using animal wool, vegetable, and synthetic fibers is known as carpet weaving and has evolved differently in various countries. This industry emerged in the 20th century and saw a transition from handmade to machine-made techniques. In 1978, the Khiva Carpet Factory was established in Uzbekistan, making carpet weaving a prominent part of the local industry. After gaining independence, Uzbekistan’s carpet industry saw advancements through international partnerships and the adoption of modern technologies and equipment from countries like England, Poland, Turkey, Germany, and others. According to the Statistics Agency, in the first seven months of 2024, Uzbekistan exported 4.3 million square meters of carpets worth $13 million. The majority of these exports were to Azerbaijan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Afghanistan. Other countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan were also significant buyers of Uzbekistan’s carpets. These carpets, woven by hand in cities like Bukhara, Shakhrisabz, Urgut, Nurata, and Bulungur, showcase unique local styles and artistic techniques. A. Rustamov, UzA.
