The Uzbek government recently revealed the official logo for the upcoming CITES CoP20, designed by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change. This logo was unveiled at the 78th meeting of the CITES Standing Committee in Geneva. According to Aziz Abdukhakimov, the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, the logo represents Uzbekistan’s dedication to preserving its diverse wildlife. Each element of the logo has a significant meaning, representing the inseparable connection between nature, culture, and history in the region. As the host country, Uzbekistan is proud to facilitate discussions on global biodiversity conservation issues and hopes that the conference will strengthen international cooperation in this area. The logo incorporates elements of Uzbekistan’s national natural and cultural heritage, including an ancient petroglyph of an argali (mountain sheep), a medicinal plant, and landmarks of Samarkand. These elements serve as reminders of the importance of protecting rare and endangered species, the vital role of flora in ecosystems, and the rich history and culture of Uzbekistan. CITES Secretary-General Ivonne Higuero praised the logo for beautifully representing the organization’s 50-year legacy of nature conservation and setting the stage for important discussions and decisions at COP20. This will be the first time a Central Asian country hosts the meeting, with over 4,000 participants expected to attend during the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy.
