SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s oceans minister implored the international community to come together in the fight against climate change during a session held Wednesday as part of the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.

“We are seeing floods in areas of low-lying nations as sea levels rise, and changes to the environment and marine life are occurring,” said Cho Seung-hwan. “South Korea empathizes with the world and is seeking global collaboration in the maritime sector.”

Cho added that the nation is taking steps to host the 2030 World Expo in Busan as a show of its dedication to tackling climate change, particularly in the maritime sector.

The Belt and Road Initiative is a Chinese-led global infrastructure and energy project that seeks to connect China with Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Europe and Africa. South Korea is not a participant in the initiative.
