The State Museum of History of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, is currently carrying out a planned restoration of a fresco that was discovered at the Varakhsha settlement. According to a report by the foundation, the fresco was originally found in 1953 during excavations of a palace near Bukhara by V.A. Shishkin and was restored in 1954 by P.I. Kostrov, a restorer from the Hermitage. Experts believe that the well-known wall painting, dating back to the 7th century, was situated in the Red Hall of the palace belonging to the Sogdian Bukharkhudat dynasty. The painting depicts a fantastical battle scene featuring hunters on white elephants, as well as leopards and griffins. Recently, a part of the fresco was restored in 2022 for an exhibition at the Louvre titled “The Splendours of Uzbekistan’s Oases: at the Crossroads of the Caravan Routes.” This restoration was done by Nazokat Usmanova, UzA.
