Officials from South Korea and Latin American countries, both from the government and corporate sector, will assemble in Mexico City this week to brainstorm ways to boost trade and foster collaboration in the field of information and communication technology (ICT). The Korea-Latin America and the Caribbean Innovation and Trade Forum, co-hosted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Inter-American Development Bank, will take place over two days.

The attendees will attend seminars on a variety of topics, including e-mobility, digital infrastructure, smart manufacturing and smart cities, and will have individual consultations to form business ties and explore potential ventures. South Korean companies such as Hyundai Motor Co., LG Electronics Inc., LG Uplus Corp., Samsung SDS Co. and Kakao Corp. will be in attendance, along with representatives from eight Central and Southern American nations, including Mexico, Brazil and Chile.

Kim Jae-hwan, a senior finance ministry official, remarked, “The two sides can create a new cooperation model and forge complementary relations based on South Korea’s digital technology prowess and Latin America’s manufacturing sector.” He added, “The government will further expand joint projects with Latin American nations and support private investment in the region through the economic development cooperation fund and the official development assistance programs.”

Statistics from the government show that trade between South Korea and Central and Southern American countries has increased by more than tenfold in the past three decades, reaching a total of $59.3 billion in 2022.
